BEIRUT: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Progressive Socialist Party leader Thursday offered their support to Saudi Arabia’s military actions against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Hariri praised Saudi Arabia's King Salman for his “wise” decision to launch a military offensive against the rebels.
Saudi Arabia led Arab coalition airstrikes against targets in neighboring Yemen early Thursday to counter Iran-allied rebel forces besieging the southern port city of Aden, the country's second-largest city.
“King Salman's decision to intervene militarily in Yemen is wise and brave,” Hariri wrote on Twitter.
“Iranian meddling in Yemen necessiates an Arab reaction,” he added, predicting that Yemenis would support the strikes.
Jumblatt said recent developments in Yemen posed a serious threat to Lebanese.
"In short, Houthis, along with [Yemen’s ex-President] Ali Abdullah Saleh and their Iranian allies have foiled the Gulf initiative toward a solution in Yemen,” Jumblatt tweeted.
“We stand by Saudi Arabia because the events in Yemen constitute a threat to its national security and the security of the Gulf as well as a threat to the interests of the Lebanese who have been working for decades in this country," he added.
He said stability in Yemen and the region could only be restored via dialogue.
