The Jounieh Municipality Thursday blamed unknown assailants for a massive garbage fire one day earlier under a highway overpass which caused a severe evening traffic jam and blinded motorists under thick plumes of smoke.Piles of trash placed by the municipality in a temporary dump under the overpass connecting Jounieh to its suburb Ghazir, north of Beirut, caught fire and burned for several hours Wednesday evening before Civil Defense forces extinguished the blaze. The statement said it had been piling the region's trash under the bridge since the beginning of the garbage crisis as a temporary solution to keep the city's streets clean.Machnouk later followed through with the request, calling on municipalities to refrain from burning any trash at all.
