Not everything is as it seems when it comes to the Internal Security Forces' faceoff with protesters during the recent anti-government demonstrations. ISF personnel and demonstrators now sympathize with each other and show mutual respect. After Ayash lectured the ISF personnel regarding the corruption of state officials and the righteous demands of the protesters, the ISF member replied "at your command".Hawshar was arrested because he attempted to stop riot police from detaining a fellow female demonstrator. After the pair were led behind the iron barricade dividing protesters from riot police, Hawshar claims he was thrown to the ground and beaten even though he had surrendered. The fact that the list was leaked might mean that some police members supported the demands of demonstrators.Khoury believes that the fact that commanding officers do not specify the degree of violence the rank and file ought to use against the protesters places increased mental duress on them.Such a state causes feelings of guilt to emerge which riot police then justify by lying to themselves.
