Tens of thousands of Shiites took part in mass marches across Lebanon Saturday for annual Ashura processions to mourn the death Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammad.Shiite areas in the Bekaa Valley and the southern city of Tyre witnessed similar processions, while thousands more in the southern city of Nabatieh performed self-flagellation.The day is observed as a symbol of sacrifice and mourning to recall the death of Imam Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Taleb, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, in the battle of Karbala on the 10th day of Muharram in 680 AD while fighting against the army of Caliph Yazid.Hussein had refused to pledge allegiance to the Caliph.
