Sept. 1 of this year, marks the 95th anniversary of declaring the State of Great Lebanon. The State of Greater Lebanon received a Constitution on May 23, 1926, which transformed it into the Lebanese Republic.Lebanon is also a founding Member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and a significant contributor in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from early 1947 to late 1948, and among the members of the first United Nations Commission on Human Rights. The mission of the state of Greater Lebanon, at that time, was similar to UNESCO's mission toward the League of Nations. In education, Lebanon had a head start over other parts of the Middle East.Lebanon has also committed itself to the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to provide an education of quality.Only this is not what Lebanon looks like at present. On the 95th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Greater Lebanon, we need to renew and reaffirm Lebanon as a state of knowledge. It may be time to project an image of a Lebanon associated with Lebanon's undeniable heritage, knowledge and culture.
