Members of the American University of Beirut issued a statement Wednesday affirming their support for the ongoing protests in the capital, joining calls for a solution to the garbage crisis and an end to government corruption. The statement came following the violent eviction of peaceful protesters affiliated with the "You Stink" activist group from the Environment Ministry Tuesday. Demonstrators stormed the ministry and staged a sit-in, declaring they would not vacate the premises until Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouk resigned. Demonstrators called for holding accountable Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk for his role in the violent suppression of peaceful protests over the previous weekend.
