European Union ambassadors voiced their support for Tammam Salam's government Friday during a meeting with the premier at the Grand Serail and stressed the right of the Lebanese to demonstrate and enjoy an accountable government. During the meeting, the ambassadors endorsed Salam's efforts to keep his government stable and functioning during the ongoing political deadlock and presidential interregnum, according to a press release issued by the EU's European External Action Service.Ambassadors reiterated the EU's expectation that a new president would be elected without further delay and that Parliament would speedily advance pressing legislation, including a new electoral law regarding legislative elections, according to the statement.EU ambassadors also underscored their support for the right of Lebanese citizens to assemble and petition their government for the effective application of the rule of law and transparency in public policy, according to the release.The ambassadors took the opportunity to state that the EU welcomes the investigation by the Interior Ministry to hold accountable those who used disproportionate force against the demonstrators.
