Convening the Cabinet hinges on the outcome of ongoing contacts between Speaker Nabih Berri, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri and MP Walid Jumblatt to settle a dispute over military promotions, a key demand of MP Michel Aoun's Free Patriotic Movement, political sources said Monday.Sources in the FPM said the presence of the FPM and Hezbollah ministers, who had boycotted the Cabinet sessions over the issue of military appointments and the government's decision-making system, hinged on the outcome of consultations on the promotion of a number of senior officers, including Roukoz, to the rank of major general. The FPM sources warned that calling the Cabinet into session without a prior agreement on the issue of military promotions would have grave repercussions on the fate of the government and on the political situation in the country.Gen. Aoun would probably reconsider his participation in next week's national dialogue sessions if Siniora insisted on rejecting a proposal aimed at raising the retirement ages of senior Army officers, including Roukoz, who retires on Oct. 15, the sources said. They added that calling for a Cabinet session without an accord on the issue of military promotions would probably lead to an escalation of the FPM's planned street demonstration near the Presidential Palace in Baabda on Oct. 11 .
