The Agriculture Ministry announced over the weekend that the recent H5N1 avian flu outbreak in the Bekaa Valley is now under control, but the affected area will remain under quarantine over the coming days. The ministry announced in a statement Saturday that its technical teams had concluded their work at the infected farms in the Baalbek-Hermel village of Nabi Sheet.Fears of a full-blown outbreak of H5N1 bird flu emerged last week, after Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb announced the disease had been found in a number of poultry farms in Nabi Sheet.H5N1 is a highly contagious avian flu that, although it does not often infect humans, can be life-threatening when it does.The outbreak was discovered after a number of birds died at several farms in the area.
