Army commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi told soldiers Monday during Army Day that the security and stability of Lebanon is only maintained through their valiant efforts. Officials from across the political spectrum also lauded the Army and thanked them for their service and sacrifice. Typically, graduating officers would receive celebratory swords on Army Day.Instead of the traditional parade, the Army hosted several small ceremonies across the various command headquarters. Chief of Staff Waleed Salman, representing Kahwagi, oversaw the delivery of the Order of the Day to the battalions stationed in the Army headquarters in Yarze. Speaker Nabih Berri spoke to Kahwagi over the phone, congratulating him on the advent of Army Day.Soldiers and security servicemen are prohibited from voting in elections in Lebanon.The Army commander voiced his appreciation for the service rendered by fallen Army soldiers. Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham militants kidnapped more than 30 soldiers and security servicemen in Arsal in Aug. 2014 following five days of intense clashes with the Army. Former President Michel Sleiman said the Army and government must act to free them.
