A policeman was shot and killed while manning a checkpoint near Beirut Thursday. In a separate case, a judge postponed the retrial of Mohammad al-Nhaily, sentenced in August to five years in prison for using a pressure cooker to bludgeon his wife Manal Assi to death in 2014 .Judge Suhair Harakeh, the head of the Court of Cassation, rescheduled the trial for Jan. 19, 2017 . Given Lebanon's nine-month judicial year and accounting for time already served, Nhaily's five-year conviction would have seen him released a little over a year after sentencing. However, State Prosecutor Samir Hammoud appealed the sentence in October for being too "lenient".
