Protected witness PRH 539, a former investigator at the U.N. International Independent Investigative Commission, testified Wednesday at the Special Tribunal of Lebanon that any suspicions against Wissam al-Hasan were dismissed after a thorough investigation. The defense counsel, led by Aouini, cross-examined the former investigator about a confidential meeting that took place on Jan. 1, 2006, between the witness and Walid Jumblatt, Druze leader of the Progressive Socialist Party.Despite the defense counsel's questioning of Jumblatt's choice in language, the former investigator maintained that the PSP leader's comments were not to be understood as accusatory. After an apparent deadlock between the defense counsel and the witness, Judge David Re chimed in, questioning whether the witness was aware of the rumors that emerged just hours after the bombing that Hasan was a co-conspirator.
