Failure to prosecute perpetrators of past genocides and create a robust international prevention mechanism has directly allowed human atrocities to take place in the region today, scholars said at a major conference Friday. Against this backdrop, speakers from around the world gathered at the American University of Beirut to discuss prevention and protection against atrocities in the Middle East and North African Region.Judges, professors and other scholars attended the event to exchange thoughts regarding the best ways to recognize and prevent future genocides.Maalouf encouraged civil society to make up for the state's failure to question and document ongoing crimes.Doumit called for making a geopolitical deal and echoed Jurdi's comments of refusing to use "a lack of political will," as an excuse.Kai Ambas, a professor and district court judge for Goettingen in Germany, flew into Beirut just to attend the conference and called on Lebanon to ratify the International Criminal Court statute. The common theme throughout the conference was the role civil society must play in continuing to speak up against crimes against humanity, while not letting go of past atrocities such as the Armenian Genocide.
