Lebanese ministers approved a decree to make Civil Defense volunteers full-time workers Wednesday, but postponed discussion on a controversial proposal to add a new tax on fuel.Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil announced through his Twitter account the adoption of the bill, which was the first item on the Cabinet's agenda. There is an annual $1.5 billion to $2 billion deficit in Lebanon's electricity sector alone.Several ministers, however, voiced their objections to the idea before entering the session. Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said that the government should stop wasting public funds before imposing new taxes on the citizens.Another Cabinet meeting will be held Thursday where the fuel tax proposal is likely to be brought up for discussion again.
