The pine processionary moth invaded Lebanon's largest and most striking pine tree reservation, threatening its well-being and possibly its very existence. The moth gorges itself on tree leaves until it withers away. On the highway from Roum toward Bkassine, the moth wreaked havoc on trees and bushes, leaving its silk nests across the branches of shrubberies. Fruit-bearing trees have been decimated as the voracious moths continue their advance. The moth rests within the pines to lay its eggs.It was home to some 100,000 pine trees in the last century, but its numbers have diminished to about 50,000 .Ghazez maintained that the greatest threat was the moth. The moth's numbers are now equal to that of the pine trees.
