Former Information Minister Michel Samaha was released from jail Thursday evening to the dismay of March 14 leaders who branded the court's decision to free the disgraced politician as "preposterous".Samaha was released on conditional bail after spending nearly three and half years in prison, with stipulations imposed by the court. He is forbidden from leaving the country and from discussing, in whatever form, the details of the court proceedings pending a verdict on his retrial. The court's decision is final, despite objections by the Public Prosecutor. The court cited Article 129 of the Jurisdiction of Penal Courts statute in order to reach its decision. The article allows the court to choose between either keeping the suspect in custody until a final verdict is issued or releasing him on bail. A judicial source speculated that Samaha's release on bail may be a precursor for his final release.Samaha was first convicted by the Military Tribunal last May of plotting to assassinate political and religious figures in addition to planning terrorist attacks.
