Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah Friday threw his weight fully behind MP Michel Aoun's candidacy for the presidency, strongly dismissing the possibility of any change of heart in favor of Aoun's rival, MP Sleiman Frangieh. While reaffirming Hezbollah's strong alliance with Aoun, Nasrallah showered praise on Frangieh as an "old ally and dear friend". Nasrallah's remarks put an end to weeks of speculation and confusion over Hezbollah's position regarding the presidential election in light of an internationally backed initiative launched in November by former Prime Minister Saad Hariri to back Frangieh, head of the Marada Movement, for the presidency.Nasrallah's declaration also came less than two weeks after Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea endorsed his wartime foe, Aoun, for the presidency in a dramatic move that has thrown the political landscape into disarray, leading to a realignment of forces within the March 8 and March 14 camps.Geagea's Although Hezbollah is a political opponent of the LF, Nasrallah praised Geagea's support for Aoun as "a positive and dramatic development," renewing calls for all rivals in the country to open channels of dialogue.
