Families and beach-lovers can now enjoy the swimming season at the historic Zira Island. Its beach opened Friday, coinciding with a plan to move sand from the sea floor onto the island. The Friends of Zira and Sidon's Beach organization and Sidon Mayor Mohammad Saudi have announced that sand will be added to a rocky part of the island to ensure visitor safety.The Awali River is the main source of sand for the beach near Zira and the area that falls between it and the island.Sidon's Island, called Zira by locals, is one of the only remaining landmarks from historic Sidon.
