The parliamentary Future bloc Tuesday praised Saudi Arabia's "great and important role" in defense of Lebanon's independence and civil peace, days after Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk blamed some unpopular decisions on the former Saudi leadership's policy in Lebanon. The bloc's stance comes a few days after the British and Saudi embassies in Beirut refuted Machnouk's claims that their countries had played key roles in MP Sleiman Frangieh's nomination for the presidency. It commended the "great and important role" played by Saudi Arabia in Lebanon under the successive regimes in the kingdom. The bloc recalled that Saudi Arabia, under the late kings Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz and Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, had stood on Lebanon's side during the 1975-90 Civil War, working to support and ensure the success of all reconciliation initiatives in order for the country to overcome its crisis, in addition to the Saudi role in postwar reconstruction.Lebanon has been without a president for more than two years since former President Michel Sleiman's six-year tenure ended in May 2014 .In an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio station, Hajjar said Hariri would announce "important stances" this week following Machnouk's recent remarks on Frangieh's nomination and the "former Saudi policy" in Lebanon which caused a political stir in the country.
