Hundreds of participants of various ages crammed the Gemmayzeh Street Sunday to enjoy a car-free day held by NGOs Achrafieh 2020 and Donner Sang Compter to mark World Blood Donor Day.Achrafieh 2020 has held three to four car-free days per year in neighborhoods across the east Beirut quarter since its inception in 2012 . The car-free days are not usually held during the summer because of the heat, but the occasion of World Blood Donor Day was worth an exception.DSC has regularly held blood drives at Achrafieh 2020 events, and has organized some 400 blood drives over the past two and half years. The atmosphere in the street is something Achrafieh 2020 is hoping to inspire constantly across the neighborhood and the city – a "livable, breathable, welcoming, and friendly neighborhood," in the words of its manifesto, with big and small businesses, performers, activities and various causes bringing life to an area.
