Prime Minister Tammam Salam is unlikely to renew the term of State Security deputy head Brig. Gen. Mohammad Tufayli, sources told The Daily Star following Thursday's Cabinet session. Cabinet also failed to agree on any of the contentious points on its agenda. Health Minister Wael Abu Faour met with Hariri at his Downtown Beirut residence earlier in the day.Hariri later held discussions with French Ambassador Emmanuel Bonne.Cabinet convened at 10:30 a.m. for its first session since Kataeb Party ministers resigned Tuesday. Cabinet unanimously rejected Gemayel's explanation of what drove his party's ministers to resign.Salam said Kataeb's absence disrupts Cabinet's political equilibrium, but stressed that it remains constitutional and in accordance with the National Pact due to the remaining presence of 10 Christian ministers. During the three-hour-long session, a debate erupted between Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb and two FPM ministers over the investigation into "illegal" internet providers. The FPM ministers said a report by the Telecommunications Ministry for Cabinet was inadequate and outdated, as it was written before the scandal erupted. Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon suggested that Cabinet spend one session focused on contentious issues, instead of continuously delaying them.
