Israel has yet to respond to requests by U.N. peacekeepers to withdraw from the border village of Ghajar, a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon spokesperson told The Daily Star Monday as it marked the 38th anniversary of their deployment in the south.Tenenti also reiterated that UNIFIL's mandate was limited to monitoring the land border. He stressed that UNIFIL had already suggested establishing a maritime security line and that it would help establish this only if both the governments of Lebanon and Israel agreed on the matter. UNIFIL's presence in south Lebanon goes back to 1978 when U.N. Security Council resolutions 425 and 426 established the peacekeeper's mandate and tasked them with confirming the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south.Following the 2006 war, UNIFIL's mandate was expanded by Security Council Resolution 1701 .
