As elections approach, and after the deadline for new candidates to join the race has closed, three lists in Sidon are battling for dominance of the city's municipal council to lead for the next six years. Fifty-six candidates are vying for the seats of Sidon's 21-member council. They are among 1,186 candidates running for local polls in Sidon's district. Former Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya senior official Ali Sheikh Ammar formed an independent nine-member list. Saudi, the current mayor and the head of the Future Movement backed-list for the council, seemed excited as he relayed his experience of the electoral battle.Hariri's most serious competition stems from a list backed by the Popular Nasserite Organization, and dubbed the Peoples' Voice. Its members are currently touring the city as they consult with local social, religious, and political figures.
