Mustafa Badreddine, whose death in an explosion in Damascus was announced Friday, was a shadowy figure that headed Hezbollah's military wing.Badreddine was born in Ghobeiri in 1961, a neighborhood in Beirut's infamous "belt of misery" that sprawled into a chaotic, busy, Shiite-Hezbollah stronghold after the group's rise to prominence in the early '80s.Badreddine was one of five indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon for his alleged role as a leader of the plot to assassinate former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.Following Hezbollah's intervention in Syria to support embattled President Bashar Assad, Badreddine is believed to have led operations since 2012 .The U.S Treasury Department twice imposed sanctions on Badreddine for his involvement in the Syria war, in 2011 and in 2015 .
