As the deadline for submitting candidacies for the municipal and mukhtar elections ended Thursday in the governorate of Akkar, there are few indicators of the impending elections in many areas despite them being less than two weeks away. This apparent stillness doesn't reflect the tight competition in many of the towns and villages, especially the main residential areas in Halba, Bibnine, Qobeiyat, Bireh, Rahbeh and others. There are three complete lists competing in Halba over the 18-member municipal council. In Bibnine-Abdeh, one of Akkar's largest towns, there are also three lists competing for the 21-member municipal council. The municipal elections battle in Rahbeh, one of Akkar's towns, will see a long-term incumbent stave off competition from fresh faces.Seven municipal councils have run uncontested and have therefore won by acclamation in Akkar and 47 mukhtars won in the same way in 45 towns and areas.
