At the main entrance to the Christian town of Jezzine, where a monument of Saint Virgin Mary rises, competition for municipal seats and a parliamentary by-election was extremely intense between delegates representing the candidate list backed by the Free Patriotic Movement, the Lebanese Forces and the Kataeb Party, and those representing the rival ticket of Ibrahim Azar, son of former MP Samir Azar, who is backed by Speaker Nabih Berri's Amal Movement. In addition to fielding a rival ticket for Jezzine's 18-member municipal council, (two members go to the nearby village of Ain Majdalyn), Azar is also one of three candidates running against businessman Amal Abou Zeid, the FPM's nominee, to fill a parliamentary seat left vacant by MP Michel Helou from the FPM who died in June 2014 .
