Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri pledged Monday to work hard to end the 2-year-old presidential vacuum, saying the country's socioeconomic situation was intolerable. He spoke to reporters in Kuwait after holding talks with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah centering on the presidential void, which last week entered its third year with no end in sight. Hariri first met with the emir at the Bayan Palace in the presence of Kuwait's deputy emir, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, and First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah.Hariri later held a closed meeting with the Kuwaiti emir.Last year, Hariri nominated MP Sleiman Frangieh for the presidency as a part of an internationally backed initiative to end the power vacuum.
