A new poll released less than two weeks after the election of Gen. Michel Aoun as president shows a high level of satisfaction with his appointment, but also highlights the challenges and flaws of political polling in the country. It also reported that 74 percent of Christians, 42 percent of Shiites, 66 percent of Sunnis and 51 percent of Druze respondents believed that Aoun promised "a better future," for Lebanon. This global question was illustrated after dramatic outcomes in both the recent U.S. elections and the Brexit vote in the U.K. which pollsters had continually miscalled. While a global challenge, polling as a source of political information is still in its infancy in Lebanon according to Tamirace Sakhoury, a professor of political science at the Lebanese American University. The impact of this is heavily skewed outcomes to surveys.According to Haber, groups like Statistics Lebanon generally have access to high-quality information that allows them to make accurate predictions.
