The Foreign Minister of Qatar visited Lebanon Wednesday, the second senior Gulf official to visit Beirut since President Michel Aoun's election, signaling renewed support after ties had recently turned sour. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdel-Rahman al-Thani arrived Wednesday and headed directly to the presidential palace in Baabda to meet with Aoun. Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid al-Thani congratulated Aoun on his election and expressed hopes that Lebanon will reclaim its role in the region. He also extended an invitation to Aoun to visit Doha in the future. "We remember the help Qatar offered Lebanon in 2006 as well as the pivotal role it played in the Doha agreement," Bassil said.He added that Lebanon would not forget the economic and financial support Qatar provided in the past and that he is looking forward to improving ties in the near future.The Qatari delegation's trip follows Saudi, Egyptian and Iranian representatives' visits to Lebanon since the presidential election.
