Pressure mounted on the Army Wednesday to suspend work on a security wall being built around the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh near Sidon after Lebanese and Palestinian officials called for construction to be halted. In a joint statement, Sidon MPs Bahia Hariri and Fouad Siniora expressed their dissatisfaction with the wall. The work on the wall around the refugee camp near Sidon became a point of controversy, despite an agreement between Palestinian factions and the Army over the project at its inception.Secular and Islamic factions in Sidon also urged the Lebanese government to reconsider the wall, saying that it would turn the camp into a prison. The Islamic Jihad Movement also said it was against the building of the wall, adding that it is working with the official Lebanese and Palestinian factions to stop construction.Part of the wall had also already been constructed on the eastern side of the camp.
