Top Maronite leaders flocked to Bkirki Tuesday to show solidarity with Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai, who is locked in a heated row with Speaker Nabih Berri. The two leaders are sparring over Berri's proposed package deal to end the presidential crisis.Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil met Rai as an envoy from Free Patriotic Movement founder MP Michel Aoun for talks on the presidential deadlock amid Berri's controversial proposal for a "full-package" deal that includes the election of a president, an agreement on a new voting system and the shape of the new government. However, Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea, who also met Rai, reiterated the LF's flat rejection of Berri's package proposal, and instead urged lawmakers to go to Parliament to elect a president as stipulated by the Constitution.Despite opposition from some parliamentary blocs, Berri has maintained that his package proposal is the only solution to end the presidential void, which has entered its third year. For his part, Geagea renewed the LF's rejection of Berri's proposed package.
