Communication skills are crucial for primary health care physicians, particularly when diagnosing patients who may have psychological distress. The package, which took three years to finalize, is the latest development in a movement aimed at addressing communication skills in the medical practice, an effort that began back in the '90s, Saab explained.Saab founded the project and formed a group of physicians to work on the issue. There is a clear need for this training – Saab said studies showed patients only spoke for an average of "12 to 18 seconds" before the physician jumped in.Saab said, explaining the proper course of the discussion.Recapping information the patient has given can also help demonstrate that the physician has been listening. It then demonstrates to students and doctors how to correct these mistakes. The package aims to encourage primary health care physicians and medical students to adopt a more patient-centered approach and a more biopsychosocial one, Saab explained.Doctors need to think beyond what is biological, because an issue might be related to social or psychological factors. With a series of questions and good communication skills, the doctor managed to see that the issue wasn't physical.
