Thousands of volunteers as well as local MPs turned out Sunday in a huge cleanup effort to mark the National Day of the Litani River, one of Lebanon's most important, longest and heavily polluted rivers.Faqih said that what had happened to the river was unfortunate, as he joined dozens of volunteers in his area Sunday in a campaign to clean rubbish from a stretch of the Litani.Zein described the effort as "symbolic," announcing that Sunday's work would concentrate on 10 main sites along the river, adding that most municipalities in his union were taking part.On July 14, the World Bank Board of Directors approved a $55 million loan to address pressing sources of pollution in the river and the man-made Qaraoun reservoir in the upper Litani River.Fneish said that the pollution of the Litani shouldn't be repeated but said there needs to be an attitude change among the concerned authorities toward the river and the issues that caused the situation.
