Former Secretary of the Progressive Socialist Party Sharif Fayyad passed away Wednesday following a long battle with cancer, the party announced. Born in 1937, Fayyad was a close aide to PSP head MP Walid Jumblatt and was the commander of the party's armed wing during the Civil War. Fayyad took Walid Jumblatt under his wing after his father's assassination in 1977 .The Mountain Reconciliation saw Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Nasrallah Butros Sfeir and Jumblatt in 2001 bring together Christian and Druze communities after fighting that killed hundreds in 1983 forced Christian families from the Chouf.
