Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri held crucial talks with Speaker Nabih Berri Thursday in his latest round of consultations over the presidential crisis, hours after Lebanon's defense minister extended the term of the Army commander.Defense Minister Samir Moqbel extended the term of Lebanese Army commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi despite staunch opposition from the Free Patriotic Movement. Moqbel announced that he would extend the term of Army Chief of Staff Maj. Moqbel explained that if Cabinet meets soon and appoints a new Army commander, his decision to extend Kahwagi's term will be annulled.As for the Army chief of staff, Moqbel said that the decision would be taken by noon Friday.Delegated by Jumblatt, Abu Faour had visited Berri earlier in the day, according to Berri's press office.Frangieh is backed by Berri, Hariri, Jumblatt, and a number of independent lawmakers, while Aoun is supported by Hezbollah and some of its March 8 allies, as well as the Lebanese Forces Party.
