BEIRUT: Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said Monday that the best response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on Jerusalem was to call for another intifada.
In an fiery televised speech addressing thousands of protesters in Beirut’s southern suburbs, Nasrallah blasted Trump over the U.S. president’s recognition of occupied Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“The most important response will be to announce a third Palestinian intifada on all occupied Palestinian territories, and it is upon the Arab and Islamic world to stand by [the Palestinians’] side,” Nasrallah said.
He also called on Arabs to halt the peace process and to call on the U.S. to retreat from Trump’s decision, which also included unprecedented plans to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
Lambasting Trump and the decision, which was announced last week, the Hezbollah leader said that the American administration was waiting for the world to welcome the decision and follow suit in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“Trump appeared to be alone in his decision, with Israel at his side," Nasrallah said, in one of his most combative speeches in recent weeks. “We should show our appreciation for the stances taken ... including all those countries that have rejected Trump’s decision."
Crowds had gathered in Beirut’s southern suburbs from early Monday afternoon, marching and chanting in solidarity with the Palestinian people and in rejection of Trump's decision, after Nasrallah called for the demonstration in a speech Thursday. Amal Movement supporters also joined the protest.
Nasrallah saluted Palestinians in Lebanon, praising their commitment to their right to return to Palestine. “I salute the Palestinians ... that are still committed to their right to return and who are raising their children on this dream, which will come true very soon,” Nasrallah said, in reference to Palestinians living in refugee camps.
“I salute ... the people of Gaza, in the West Bank, for their positions since Trump’s decision,” he added. “These people that have sacrificed so much, these people that have defended Jerusalem, they have all our gratitude.”
He called on Arab states to abandon all talks aimed at facilitating the peace process in the Middle East, adding that “if Trump reverses his decision, it’s your call if you want to continue peace talks,” he said.
The final motto to live by, he said, is: “Death to Israel.”
He added that Trump's decision would prove to be “the beginning of the end of Israel, God willing.”
Nasrallah called on all resistance fighters and factions in the region to come together, saying that it was vital to put forward a unified strategy for confrontation. "We in Hezbollah will carry on with our responsibilities in this regard," Nasrallah said, reiterating that the threat represented by Israel and the United States should be turned into an opportunity.
"We march to Jerusalem with millions of martyrs," Nasrallah said, before the thousands of protesters who joined him in chanting the slogan.
