Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil warned Friday of an "open political confrontation" with President Michel Aoun over the signing of a decree promoting a number of Army officers, in the latest serious twist of an escalating feud between the president and Speaker Nabih Berri over the controversial decree.Khalil rejected Aoun's remarks Thursday that the problem was not related to officers' rights, but rather to "a political struggle" over other issues.Hariri, Khalil and Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk have already signed the decrees while Defense Minister Yaacoub Sarraf also signed a decree securing the future promotion of Army officers, the statement said. These decrees have to be signed at the end of every year by the president and the defense minister to ensure that officers get promoted to higher ranks. Hezbollah, which is allied with both Aoun and Berri, has so far stayed neutral on the ongoing dispute between the two leaders.Tensions between Aoun and Berri have been rising over the decree, which overlooked the finance minister's signature.
