Lebanese cartoonist Stavro Jabra passes away

BEIRUT: Stavro Jabra, a famous cartoonist who had worked for The Daily Star and other newspapers in Lebanon and abroad, passed away Sunday as a result of a chronic illness, a source told The Daily Star. He was 70-years-old.

"Stavro Jabra is a pen that stabs ignorance with liberty, may you rest in peace," Infromation Minister Melhem Riachi said on Twitter mourning the artist.

Culture Minister Ghattas Khoury also mourned the late cartoonist.

Jabra excelled at drawing cartoons parodying national and international leaders and the political scene in Lebanon.

He founded the "Lebanese Press Photographers Syndicate" and was its president emeritus in the year 1992.

Jabra also drew for a number of Lebanese magazines and TV channels where his work garnered local and regional admiration and appreciation.

He was also a renowned photojournalist and an author of cartoon books.

The Press Club and the head of the Journalists' Union also expressed their sympathy with Jabra's family.

Jabra’s funeral will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Ashrafieh's Saint Nicolas Church.

He will be laid to rest in Ras Beirut.
