Kassem Tajeddine's family Wednesday responded to allegations that the prominent Lebanese businessman was financing terrorism, after reports that Tajeddine would be deported to the United States surfaced a day earlier.Mallat, acting on behalf of the family, then sent The Daily Star a statement detailing Tajeddine's cooperation with the U.S. since being placed on its sanctions list eight years ago. The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control added Tajeddine to its sanctions list in May 2009, as a specially designated global terrorist, on the basis that the businessman had allegedly diverted funds to Hezbollah, considered a terrorist entity by the U.S. government. In doing so, Mr. Tajideen agreed to an unprecedented, comprehensive forensic investigation of his personal and business dealings by a leading global accounting firm, which found no evidence to support OFAC's designation".The statement added that ever since his designation, Tajeddine has "extensively" cooperated with OFAC, improving his company's compliance procedures to mitigate any possibility that his enterprises were involved in transferring funds to terrorists without his consent.
