In an effort to improve trust and the engagement of youth in the public sector, the Civil Impact Forum and the American University of Beirut are launching initiatives aimed at increasing student participation in volunteering. The two bodies signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a new civic development center by September, among other projects, at a ceremony held at AUB last week. The center will work to connect AUB students with NGOs and other organizations for volunteering opportunities. The initiative, CIF's second such venture since collaborating with Universite Saint-Joseph, aims to encourage students to volunteer in the NGO sector and to engage positively with the community, while also diversifying students' skill sets outside the lecture hall. The AUB leadership hopes that the university's students will participate enthusiastically in the new program, learning to take a more altruistic view of their education and future careers.Ezzeddine reiterated that the government was working to develop an e-government strategy to better facilitate interaction between the government and its constituents. Her office hopes to exchange ideas with young people by offering internships to 10 AUB students.
