A program of cultural events began Wednesday to celebrate World Arabic Language Day, observed by the U.N. on Dec.18 .Nadine Ali Omran, president of the Safadi center, welcomed the audience, noting that the annual celebration is a victory for Arabic language, Arab culture and the Arab intellectual property, against the "fierce attack" on Arabic language from hybrid social media languages, especially "Arabizi" -- a contemporary slang that uses Latin letters and numbers instead of Arabic letters.
