Pests hitchhiking a ride to Lebanon inside travelers' hand luggage remains a major concern for the country, Agriculture Minister Ghazi Zeaiter warned Friday as a three-year initiative to raise both the public's and farmers' awareness of the issue ended. The "Surveillance and Management of Fruit Flies in Lebanon" project, launched by the ministry in 2014 in collaboration with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, aimed to spread awareness on the dangers of bringing potentially infested fruits and vegetables into the country.The Agriculture Ministry estimates fruit constitutes 50 percent of Lebanon's total agricultural output.Some new specimens have been recorded in Lebanon; however, the full results of the survey were not made available to the public.
