United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag will bid farewell to the country as she takes on a new post as the foreign trade and development cooperation minister in the Netherlands.Kaag was appointed to her post in Lebanon on Dec. 1, 2014, by then-U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Prime Minister Saad Hariri congratulated Kaag via Twitter Wednesday evening after speaking with her by phone before her official notice Thursday.Earlier this year, Kaag was tipped as a likely successor to U.N. envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura until his mandate was extended in March.
