The Foreign Ministry demanded UNHCR refrain from issuing further statements on refugee returns in a statement addressed to the body's Lebanon representative Mireille Girard Friday, days after 500 refugees returned to Syria from Lebanon. The statement said that UNHCR had not been involved in the process but had spoken to refugees to ensure the return was voluntary. He also pointed out that the UNHCR position "instilled fear and hesitation among displaced Syrians who decided voluntarily to return to their country" and argued that "the security situation in most areas allows for return".He also stressed that UNHCR data should be consistent with the latest developments in Syria and with the priorities of the Lebanese government, before demanding that the agency refrains from issuing further statements on the impending return process.
