Three hundred residents descended on Beit Mery's civic square Monday evening, angry over a plan to build a waste sorting and treatment plant in a picturesque valley nearby. Those present held a tense, 15-minute back-and-forth with Deputy Mayor Sami Moukheiber, who is also against the plan, before dispersing afterward.Detractors have several issues with the plan, which calls for a facility capable of handling 400 tons of waste per day.Another concern is the track record of the company contracted to build and operate the plant, Bioener Beit Mery SAL, which is part-owned by Italian Bioener SpA and part-owned by local businessman Georges Salim Assly.Abou Chedid said this was not the entire story.Fundamentally, Abou Chedid said, Beit Mery needs to plan for the future.Abou Chedid appears circumspect about this particular option.Resident Amani Saade hopes Moukheiber is right.Saade fears that once established, the 400-ton-per-day facility will become the solution to others' trash problems – after all, Beit Mery produces less than 20 tons of waste a day.
