Cabinet got back to work Thursday, agreeing to form a committee to oversee the expansion of Beirut's international airport in the first session after a row between the country's leaders threatened the functioning of state institutions. Cabinet meetings had not been held while tensions between President Michel Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri dominated the political scene. Hariri, Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ghassan Hasbani, Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil, Public Works and Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos and Defense Minister Yaacoub Sarraf will be on the committee.According to Social Affairs Minister Pierre Bou Assi, who read the Cabinet's decisions at the end of the session, said that the Cabinet permitted the finance minister to disburse expenses based on the 2017 budget until the 2018 budget is endorsed. Ministers, however, reportedly postponed discussing Environment Minister Tarek Khatib's request for $20 million to begin the closure and rehabilitation of informal dumps across Lebanon. The Cabinet session wasn't tension-free.Nevertheless, speaking at the beginning of the session, Aoun requested that a Cabinet session dedicated to education issues be held.Touching on the 2018 state-budget that is yet to be referred to Cabinet and endorsed by Parliament, Aoun said that this should be done soon.
