Despite reports of concerns that the Rome II conference to support Lebanon's security agencies was in danger of being postponed, the official date was set Monday. Both Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk and Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Massimo Marotti affirmed that the conference, which aims to garner support for the Lebanese Army and security forces, will be held on March 15 in Italy.During the event, which was also attended by Defense Minister Yaacoub Sarraf, the Lebanese Army's and Internal Security Forces' five-year plans were presented. The Rome II conference is among three donor conferences that will reflect the international community's support for Lebanon and its economy. The source noted that Feb. 28 had been considered for Rome II, but explained that it had been implied that it might not be suitable. The preparatory meeting also provided the platform for the ISF to launch its five-year strategic plan that will be presented at Rome II.With Rome II inching closer, Machnouk said the conference is an important opportunity to strengthen Lebanon's security agencies with appropriate military equipment.
