Two people have been arrested for allegtedly causing Zahle's Birdawni River to run red over the weekend, a security source told The Daily Star Monday. The source could not immediately confirm the location of the chocolate factory, but said that the contaminates had been dumped into the Birdawni, which feeds a large number of agricultural lands in the Bekaa, somewhere in the town of Hzarta. However, Hzarta Mayor Hussein Abu Hamdan denied that his town was the source of the pollution, instead placing the blame on a sweets factory in nearby Qaa al-Reem, the state-run National News Agency reported Sunday.
