President Michel Aoun said Saturday that he would convene a special Cabinet meeting to discuss practical solutions to an ongoing crisis surrounding hikes to private school teachers' salaries and proposed tuition fee increases to fund them. The salary scale law endorsed by the government in July mandated an increase in wages for public sector workers.Teachers have been calling for wage hikes since the salary scale, Law 46, was passed. If we add [to this number of students] their families, the issue ... is now affecting half of the Lebanese people," Khoury said. The mandated salary hikes have led some to call for an up to 30 percent increase in school tuition fees in order to fund the new wages, which many parents say they would not be able to pay.
