Apparently infuriated by President Michel Aoun's rejection of his proposal to resolve the dispute over a decree promoting a number of Army officers, Speaker Nabih Berri Monday toughened his stance on the monthlong standoff by implicitly accusing the president of violating the Taif Accord and the Constitution that stipulated equal power-sharing between Muslims and Christians. Berri's escalatory tone was the latest phase in the political showdown between the speaker and the president over the officers' decree, and it reflects the wide gap between the two leaders over a solution to the crisis that threatens to plunge the country into uncertainty and paralyze the work of state institutions.Abu Faour, who met with both Berri and Hariri Monday as part of attempts to resolve the decree crisis, warned against ignoring the Taif Accord's requirements on equal power-sharing between Muslims and Christians. He signaled Aoun's rejection of Berri's proposal in a statement after meeting the speaker at his Ain al-Tineh residence as an envoy of Jumblatt who has taken Berri's side in the decree row.Later, Abu Faour met with Hariri, discussing, among other topics, the decree crisis.Jumblatt, the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, also warned of attempts to abandon the Taif Accord.
